When it comes to auditing E/M services, there’s black, white and a whole lot of gray. Reasonable auditors can disagree. So, how can auditors and coders accurately select a level of service?
First, by thorough knowledge of the Guidelines themselves. Second, by developing a set of internal, defensible policies that address the gray areas of the Guidelines. Prior to the webinar, participants should re-read the original Guidelines and have a copy printed for reference.
The webinar will list common gray areas and suggest policy options for assessing: copying/pasting, over-documentation, how to score the 1995 exam, what “work up planned” means, how to credit—or not—the words “negative” and “non-contributory.” There will be a discussion of medical necessity and the non-key component, nature of the presenting problem.
Some parts of the Guidelines are open to interpretation, and attending this one hour webinar won’t change that. But, it will give coders the tools to develop an internal, consistent policy that is in line with the Guidelines. Attendees who register for the event are welcome to submit questions and topics up to two weeks ahead of time for inclusion in the discussion.
As always, the webinar is free to CodingIntel members.
